UN food summit battles it
out on biofuels
Leaders gathered at a summit on the world's food crisis quickly laid out their disagreements on a key issue: how much the rush for environmentally friendly biofuels is contributing to soaring prices that are causing hunger and unrest worldwide. more
Gov. Perry: "The
future of renewable energy in Texas is now"
During a recent speech at the grand opening of a
biodiesel refinery in Houston, Gov. Rick Perry underscored the need for
alternative energy sources that do not impact our food supply. Recently, the
governor petitioned the Environmental Protection Agency for a 50 percent waiver
from the federal renewable fuels standard mandate for ethanol derived from
grain. more
Forage focus: some pasture management do's and don'ts
According to Rory Lewandowski, extension educator, Athens County, Ohio, the 2008 growing season to this point, (end of May), has been good for the cool season forages that make up the vast majority of our pasture acreage. However, barring a very unusual year, we can expect that June and July will bring us stretches of dry weather and hot temperatures. Growth rates of cool season grass pastures will decline. Getting the most out of your pasture demands management, especially as growth rates decline. more
Texas crop, weather, 6-4-08
Panhandle wheat yields are expected to be low, and many dryland fields will not be harvested at all due to drought and virus infection, said a Texas
AgriLife Extension Service wheat expert. According to a May survey by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Texas wheat producers plan to harvest 98.6 million bushels of wheat this year. The forecast is 30 percent lower than the 2007 harvest, and 17 percent lower that the April 2008 agriculture department forecast. more
