Ag, livestock and food groups call for release of CRP acres
The American Meat Institute and more than 100 other members of the Alliance for Agricultural Growth and Competitiveness is calling on USDA Secretary Ed Schafer to immediately allow a penalty-free, early release of non-environmentally sensitive cropland from the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), citing U.S. Department of Agriculture reports this month which are further confirming that this year's basic crops are confronting enormous, unprecedented challenges, and an early-out CRP option is becoming more and more an urgent necessity. more
 

Mexico calls for reducing production of ethanol
Mexico's agriculture secretary says ethanol production is bankrupting cattle and poultry farmers and causing food prices to hit record highs around the world. Agriculture Secretary Alberto Cardenas says countries should change their policies and reduce production of grains for the alternative fuel. more
 

Carbon may be a cash "crop" for cattle producers
Agriculture producers may have a crop they can cash in on without having to plant or harvest anything extra, Texas AgriLife Extension Service specialists said. Dr. Steve Amosson, AgriLife Extension economist in Amarillo, said carbon sequestration is getting a lot of attention of late. Carbon sequestration is defined as the capture and secure storage of carbon.

New era of high expenses focus of 2008 Beef Cattle Short Course
"The New Era of High Input Costs" is the theme for the Texas A&M Beef Cattle Short Course scheduled Aug. 4-6 at Texas A&M University in College Station. The short course will also feature 20 other specialized workshops that are part of the Cattleman's College sessions. The Aug. 6 sessions will feature several live animal demonstrations and an opportunity for participants to obtain a pesticide applicators' license. more
