TSCRA praises TxDOT decision on Trans-Texas Corridor
"This is great news for landowners," said Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association President Jon Means of Van Horn in response to the Texas Department of Transportation's (TxDOT) announcement that it would use existing highways to build a large part of the Interstate 69/Trans-Texas Corridor. more
 

Ag secretary says U.S. beef is safe
Amid massive protests in South Korea over the planned resumption of U.S. beef imports, U.S. Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer said Tuesday that the meat is safe. "Every single carcass that's processed is inspected by a USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) inspector." more
 

Montana to lose brucellosis-free status
A cow from the Paradise Valley in Montana has tested positive for brucellosis, and will cost the state its brucellosis-free status. With the loss of Class Free status, Montana's livestock producers will now be required to test bulls and non-spayed females, 18 months of age or older, 30 days prior to interstate movement. more
 

Multiple-pasture system could save nitrogen and hay costs
According to experts, the biggest recent change to the cow/calf business has been rapidly inflating fertilizer and fuel costs. To survive, livestock producers must change the way they manage pastures, said Dr. Gerald Evers, Texas AgriLife Research forage management scientist. One change that could help livestock producers reduce inputs and make the most of their resources is to develop a three-pasture grazing system. more
 

Texas crop, weather, 6-10-08
Though avoiding using the 'D-word,' something much like a drought is ongoing throughout much of Texas, according to Texas AgriLife Extension Service agents and specialists. AgriLife Extension personnel reported record high temperatures and high winds were drying out soils and stressing crops and livestock in many Texas counties. more
