Texas granted presidential disaster declaration
President George W. Bush Thursday granted Gov. Rick Perry's request for a Major Presidential Disaster Declaration, which will provide assistance to 15 Texas counties. While decisions on individual federal assistance requests cannot be made until damage assessments are conducted, the declaration does include public assistance for emergency protective measures taken before, during and after the disaster. more
 

Cutting back on corn: Can the cattle industry survive on less corn?
Can the corn-fed cattle industry make it on less corn? Absolutely, says Dan Loy, beef nutritionist at Iowa State University. He thinks both the time spent in the finishing feedlot, and the amount of corn, can be cut in half from traditional finishing programs. more

Results from a 17-month scientific study released Thursday show that food from cloned cattle and hogs is safe to eat and that animal cloning does not have an impact on the environment. more
