TSCRA-nominated cattle operation wins regional environmental stewardship award
In a July 17 statement, the National Cattlemen's Foundation 2008 Environmental Stewardship Award Selection Committee announced this year's regional award winners -- diverse family cattle operations from across the United States. Among the winners was the TSCRA-nominated Bradley 3 Ranch of Memphis, Texas. more
 

Quarantines instated to prevent spread of ticks
Cattle fever ticks found outside special buffer zones in South Texas are alarming area ranchers. The Texas Animal Health Commission expanded the region's preventive cattle fever tick quarantine area by 307,000 acres last week after ticks were found on livestock outside special quarantine zones in Zapata and Starr counties. more
 

Dry conditions push cows to market
Rising fuel, energy, and feed costs increasingly affect cow-calf and backgrounding (stocker) profit margins, especially in those areas with inadequate precipitation where supplemental feeding has begun again or winter feeding never ceased. Commercial cow slaughter, especially beef cow slaughter, has been extensive over the last year. Meanwhile, the domestic beef cow contribution to U.S. Federally Inspected cow slaughter appears to be declining in recent weeks. more
