U.S beef popular in South Korea despite protests
U.S. beef is proving increasingly popular since going back on sale in South Korea despite months of mass protests against the supposed dangers of mad cow disease, officials said Tuesday. JoongAng Ilbo newspaper attributed the rapidly growing presence of U.S. beef largely to lower prices. more
 

Experts cast doubt on the meat & cancer hypothesis
A panel of government, university and industry experts speaking at a leading food safety conference Aug. 6 cast serious doubt on widely reported claims of a meat and cancer connection. "All too often, claims that meat is linked to cancer are made as if they are proven fact. But today's panel presented compelling evidence the 'conventional wisdom' is not always current or accurate," said Amercan Meat Institute Foundation President Randy Huffman, Ph.D.

TCEQ to host meeting on Trinity River water quality
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has scheduled a meeting to update stakeholders on the development of a Total Maximum Daily Load addressing Polychlorinated Biphenyls in the Trinity River watershed. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 26 from 1:00–3:00 p.m. in Arlington, and is open to the public. more
 

AMS live cattle grading demonstration set for Sept. 18 in Amarillo
The Livestock and Grain Market News branch of the USDA Agriculture Marketing Service (AMS) is conducting a cattle grading demonstration on Thursday, Sept. 18. hosted by Amarillo Livestock Auction, located at 100 S. Manhattan St., Amarillo, Texas. The workshop will start at 9:00 am and conclude by noon. more
 

Texas crop, weather, 8-20-08
Nearly all of Texas received some rain, with some areas such as the Panhandle getting 6 to 10 inches, according to reports from Texas AgriLife Extension Service personnel. For other parts of Texas, the rain came in more moderate amounts but was still welcome. But in South Texas, the rain added insult to injury to crops earlier damaged by Hurricane Dolly. more
