Feral swine rule to become effective Oct. 1 – TAHC response to comments and text of rules
The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) has released responses to comments made about the proposed swine rules originally posted in May. The proposal to amend the regulations was published for comment in the June 6, 2008 issue of the Texas Register. The Commission received 42 written comments regarding the proposed amendments to Chapter 55.9, for feral swine. The comments were quite varied in the issues raised, the tone of the comment, and the different positions and attitudes expressed about the proposed amendments. more
 

New AgriLife Extension forage specialist to serve northeast Texas producers
A newly appointed Texas AgriLife Extension Service forage specialist will serve more than 60 northeast counties. According to the Texas Agricultural Statistic Service, the projected 2008 value of hay alone for the area is more than $500 million. Dr. Vanessa Corriher, who is based at the Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Overton, says her biggest challenge will be to help forage and livestock producers deal with escalating costs of fuel and fertilizer. more
 

Biofuel economics: will ethanol wean the U.S. from oil imports?
Initially, critics of the emerging ethanol industry questioned whether there really was a net gain in fossil fuel produced. Through time, the efficiency of ethanol plants has increased. But will future success in weaning the U.S. from oil imports lie in corn or cellulosic-based ethanol? more
